Friday's Thomas Cook Protest

Thomas Cook has banned its staff from discussing work related matters in Welsh. Their policy has been attacked by all the main political parties, as well as the Commission for Racial Equality, but the policy persists. The only slight change they have made, is that they will not punish any staff who speak Welsh, but they still ask them to speak in English only!

Cymdeithas yr Iaith (The Welsh Language Society) have declared themselves not impressed with the latest climb-down by Thomas Cook, and have vowed to continue with plans for a demo outside the Travel Company's Bangor shop at 1pm on Friday 15/06/07.

SUPPORT THE DEMO IF YOU CAN!

The recent ban by the company Thomas Cook on the use of the Welsh language by staff and customers is an affront to the community of Wales , whether or not the citizens of Wales are fluent in Welsh. It would be inconceivable that a company in Catalonia , for example, cannot use Catalan or that the Basque language cannot be spoken, and any such action would at the least cause an outcry, if not a revolution. To deny people the opportunity to use their own native language in their own country is unacceptable and insulting.

It is high time a new Welsh language Act came into force to establish Welsh as the indisputed official language of Wales , even though it is not spoken by the majority of the population. Wales should, in my view, exist as a truly bilingual nation with Welsh as the national language and English as the international language, which it has become as the lingua franca of the world at large. This bilingual policy should be applied throughout the land, indiscriminately, in all the schools and in all areas of social and economic communication.
